Sphere

A ball generated from meridians and parallels.

Sphere
Sphere

The Sphere is generated like a globe, with vertical slices crossing horizontal rings. With few segments it becomes faceted, which is the look sought after in low poly models.

  • Radius: Distance from the center to the surface, in meters.
  • Width Seg.: Number of slices around the vertical axis. It controls the roundness seen from above.
  • Height Seg.: Number of rings from one pole to the other. It controls the roundness seen from the side.

Topology

The sphere is a grid of quads. In the two rows that close at the poles, the two top corners, or the two bottom ones, fall on the same point, and those faces behave like triangles. That is where the mesh gets tightest and where a stretched texture shows up first.

For a sphere with the polygons evenly distributed, use the polyhedron in the icosahedron shape.
